Tabasamu Watoto Inclusive Center (TWIC) started as a daycare program for teenage parents who would bring their children to the center while they go to school or work. In 2011, Dennis and Carol who were both teachers at the time, saw a need to educate individuals about special needs. They began going door-to-door educating community members about individuals and families affected by special needs and how best to support them. They also looked for children with special needs who didn’t have any educational opportunities and hence established the inclusive school.

The community’s lack of awareness of special needs led many to believe that disabled people brought bad luck because of curses or witchcraft. The society viewed persons with disabilities as not fully human or possessed by evil spirits. This made it easy to stigmatize, make fun of, or ridicule them and their families. Since Dennis and Carol founded TWIC in 2011, they have worked with over 400 families by operating different programs to increase awareness for children with special needs in Kibera.

Hope Church (Cordova, Memphis, TN) and Help the Least of These (HTLOT) visited Kibera Slums in 2011 and met Dennis & Carol. This formed a long-lasting partnership that has helped the center grow by developing programs that benefit community members, assisting in building projects, and school operations.
